Behind the Curtain: Unveiling our AI-Powered Investment Memo Generator
For many founders, fundraising feels like navigating a maze without a map. They pitch to VCs without knowing how their pitches will be received. Often, they want feedback to identify blind spots before pitching but don’t know how to get it. Our goal is to provide founders with insight into how VCs strategically evaluate businesses while encouraging them to consider key areas from a broader, long-term perspective.
To help founders, we're open-sourcing our proprietary AI-powered memo generator, a tool designed to give founders the same strategic insights VCs use to evaluate investments. An investment memo outlines the key reasons a VC is investing in a company, including an analysis of the market opportunity, team capabilities, business model, competition, and risks. Unlike generic resources this Agentic tool adapts to a specific business and offers actionable insights.
The tool works by ingesting a pitch deck or pitch transcript. Using the CrewAI agent framework (a portfolio company in Flybridge’s pre-seed NextWaveNYC fund), we developed two market research agents and equipped them with external tools like Exa. The system then processes all the information and, leveraging a highly structured prompt, generates a downloadable version of the memo. All this is properly logged using another portfolio company company, Portkey. You can view a sample memo generated by the tool for Portkey at this link.
As investors in companies like MongoDB and Appwrite, we have long advocated for open-sourcing. By sharing the Investment Memorandum Generator, we aim to demystify the VC process and create a more equitable ecosystem. Whether you're a founder refining your pitch or looking to have a holistic view of your startup, we hope this tool gives you an edge to succeed.
